We have all been touched by the crisis around us.

We are plagued by an illness that brings fear and uncertainty to our very doorsteps.  The capricious nature of the virus, infecting mysteriously with no cure, has stopped society in its tracks.  And we hold our breath as we ride out the storm.

I miss the comfort of the woods, and I look elsewhere for solace.  But I needn’t look far.  I take heart in the good deeds of my neighbors.

A crises has the power to elevate.  Some mope at their misfortune, but others spur to action and rise to the challenge.

Music as Medicine

Odell Borg has been making Native American Style Flutes for more than 30 years.  I have never met Odell.  But his son, Jonah, sold me my first Native Flute.  Odell’s many video tutorials and teaching materials helped me learn to play.  I will never grace the stage at Carnegie Hall.  But I have spent many hours delighting in an instrument that is easy to learn but difficult to master.  And it’s an instrument uniquely suited to play outdoors.

Odell announced a free flute giveaway on his High Spirits Flutes website.  He plans to give away 50 flutes each day for seven days!

The intention behind this giveaway is to put flutes into the hands of people who don’t already have one during these challenging times so they can experience the creativity, joy, and relief that playing music provides; giving us all the chance to move towards more solid ground.

I am amazed by his generosity.  Odell is offering melody over misery.  And it is a powerful gift.

Below is a video that explains the giveaway, and a link where you can participate.  Odell accidentally gives the wrong date in the video.  The giveaway starts March 28, 2020.

If you have wanted to try the Native American Style Flute, now is your chance.  I own two wonderful High Spirits flutes that give me great pleasure.

Please honor Odell’s request and only ask for a flute if you intend to learn to play it.

I love your newsletter and thank you for sharing this. I tried making one myself following bluebear on youtube. It failed. I tried 3d printing a panflute but only the largest hole made sound. I’m excited to try winning one of these awesome flutes.
