It’s Knot Funny!

ItsNotFunny
In ancient times, the world was literally tied together with cordage.  Since then we have developed modern fasteners:  nails, bolts, screws, adhesives, rivets and welding.

But in the outdoors knots are still very useful.  We tie knots to hang tarps, repair gear, help gather firewood, and lash wood together for structures.  Knots help us dry our clothing and even keep hiking boots on our feet.

Knot Technology

A knot joins, fastens, or holds objects.  You form a knot by interlacing flexible material such as cord, ribbon, or rope.  The material is held in the knot only by friction.  It is very cool when you think about it!

Different types of knots have different characteristics.  Some are easy to release while others are difficult.  Some hold when tension is absent, others come unraveled.  Many knots are best suited for specific purposes.  When you apply the right knot to solve the right problem, you are using “knot technology.”

The Trucker’s Hitch

This is what I look like after attempting to tie the Trucker’s Hitch

This is what I look like after attempting to tie the Trucker’s Hitch.

The Trucker’s Hitch is unarguably the most charismatic knot.  What makes it special is that it forms a loop and pulley.  It provides mechanical advantage when you cinch the rope tight after you tie the knot.  The Trucker’s Hitch is tremendously useful for securing loads (like on the back of a truck).  It also lends itself to suspending a ridgeline between two trees to hang a tarpaulin.  The knot is so versatile and useful that people tie it throughout the world.

But the Trucker’s Hitch is also the most enigmatic knot.  It is notoriously difficult to learn.  I use a simplified version of the knot because I never learned to tie the actual Trucker’s Hitch.  My knot is inferior, but I am using it until I can find someone to help me learn the real thing.

The Funniest Knot

It’s reputation for being difficult to learn also makes it the funniest knot.  The Norwegian comedy duo, Ylvis (What does the Fox Say?), released a funny music video that’s an homage to the Trucker’s Hitch.  If you like the outdoors, sailing, or have difficulty tying knots (like me), you will enjoy this video very much.
