Win a Madrone Firesteel!

It’s time for another giveaway!

Why?

Because it’s fun!

When I do a giveaway, I try to link it to articles appearing on the site.  This month we will talk about one of my favorite trees:  the Madrone (Arbutus menziesii).  It’s a fascinating tree and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Another article coming soon will touch on the proper technique for using a firesteel.  I think you will appreciate the advantages of carrying one in the backcountry.

The Firesteel

Our Summer Giveaway is related to the two articles.  It is a Madrone Burl handled firesteel!

The firesteel is hand-made (not by me) and I think you’ll like it a lot.  The Madrone handle is a warm, creamy brown with slightly darker figuring.  The wood is from a burl, a rounded knotty growth on a tree.  The irregular growth gives the wood its visually interesting and dense figure.

Attached to the handle is a large Swedish firesteel.  When scraped, it produces 3000°C (5,500°F) sparks.  It is good for up to 12,000 strikes and will light many fires for you.
