This website from the Smithsonian is very cool!  It permits you to search for mammals using common names, scientific names, or home ranges.  You can compile them into a “field guide” that it creates for you in PDF format.

Smithsonian North American Mammals

The information for each species is far from comprehensive.  But it is certainly fun to play with!

Note that there is an issue creating a field guide directly from the interactive map, when using Internet Explorer.  If you want to use the map, you will have to write down a list of species from the map and then in another browser tab open the “Search by Species Name” page to add them to the field guide.  Alternatively, you can use the “Search Common Names” page.  If you do not enter anything in the search field, it will list all of the species for you to select the ones you want.

Let me know if you’ve tried it.  Also tell me if you know of other online resources that help you make your own guides.

Enjoy!
